Our history begins in the 1990s when a child living in Uintah County died as a result of child abuse. It was later discovered that each agency involved with the family had separate valuable information. While each agency alone lacked sufficient information to intervene, when combined the information showed the severity of the situation.
Law enforcement investigators, Child Protection Service caseworkers, and prosecuting attorneys formed the Uintah Basin Child Abuse Task Force with the goal to prevent similar tragedies from affecting the children in our community. This group researched child abuse response in other areas and discovered that Utah had started Children's Justice Centers in several counties throughout the state.
In 1999, after much dedication and hard work, the Uintah and Daggett Counties' Children's Justice Center was established.
The director of the Children's Justice Center is Tonya Murray. She is assisted by Dorothy Greene, who serves as the Victim Services Coordinator. You may contact these individuals by referring to the contact info at the bottom of the page.
For years, the Children's Justice Center has operated in a white house across the street from Ashley Regional Medical Center. While the white house has served the CJC well, our services have required that we obtain a new building. With the cooperation and generousity of many people and organizations, the CJC now has a far more accommodating building from which to continue serving the community. The new building is larger, which will translate to a greater ability to provide services to Uintah and Daggett counties.
